Several refuse dumps have been lying for long periods unattended to, mainly due to the increasing population and its corresponding equipment holding capacity demands.
Nuisance emanating from these wastes are becoming increasingly unbearable. Reports from our health institutions in the country and beyond indicate that the very common diseases reported daily are sanitation related. These include malaria, diarrhoea, typhoid, upper respiratory track infections, etc. all of which could be prevented though proper sanitation services – good waste collection and disposal practices.
Apart from those health hazards affection the people in the community, these wastes dotted all over in our refuse dumps, in our drains and compounds and undeveloped plots and land in some communities is an eyesore reducing the beauty of the community. Also the dignity of the city residents is adversely affected by these wastes as tourists portray any such community as unplanned and filthy.
Water courses are often blocked during heavy downpour of rains, all because refuse is washed into our water channels and drains blocking the free flow of water. This is the perennial floods we experience day in and day out.
Flies, mosquitoes, rodents and other vermin of public health importance to presently have a field day in our villages, towns and cities as a result of these wastes presence in our communities. These have been resulted in resulted in death and injuries to our people declining the population growth and manpower in the country.
